AMH Test – Overview
What is the AMH Test?
AMH (anti mullerian hormone) is a hormone secreted by granulosa cells in late preantral and small antral follicles in women. In other words, it is secreted from the egg reserve in the ovary. In the embryonic period (the period in which the embryo develops after fertilization), it plays an important role in the development of reproductive organs for both sexes. If the fetus is male, AMH secreted from the Sertoli cells of the developing testes suppresses the mullerian ducts and male reproductive organs develop from the wolfian ducts.
In men, AMH levels rise rapidly after birth, highest during late infancy, then gradually decreasing until puberty. For this reason, it may serve as a testicular-specific diagnostic indicator in newborn babies with indistinguishable genitalia. The decrease in AMH level corresponds to maturation in Sertoli cells.
It is a very useful indicator in the evaluation of egg reserve in women of reproductive age. It reflects the decrease in the number of follicles in the egg reserve with advancing age. Because this is released from the follicles.
In addition, AMH measurement can also be used for iatrogenic, cancer treatment-induced hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, early ovarian failure including polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), ovarian tumors – folliculomas. can be used as a specific marker. In some scientific studies, it is said that it can be used to predict the time of menopause, especially in young women, years ago.
AMH is secreted into the follicle fluid and blood. In clinical applications, its level is determined by measuring from peripheral blood.
AMH Level
AMD rises gradually in girls from the first day of life, reaching its highest level at 25 years of age. In adult women, AMH levels gradually decrease until they drop below detectable levels after menopause. It is a reliable marker since the menstrual cycle shows little variation between cycles and cycles. According to scientific studies, the lowest level in women of reproductive age is seen in the early luteal phase after ovulation.

AMH Value

Despite a regular menstrual cycle, normal FSH, and normal estradiol (E2) levels, decreased AMH levels may indicate decreased ovarian reserve.
AMH Test Tracking
According to some studies, oral contraceptives reduce the level of AMH. For this reason, it is beneficial to discontinue these drugs when the amh test is to be performed.
Blood sample can be taken at any time as it is not significantly affected by the menstrual cycle. It is not affected by hunger or satiety. However, if satiety is not required, taking fasting blood for all tests is important for standardization.
AMH test can be measured in serum sample obtained from a small amount of blood with fully automatic devices. Therefore, results can be obtained in a short time. Since it is sufficient to take a small amount of blood sample, the result can be obtained without any risk and time loss for the patient.
